Academic Background

  • BS (’84) in Biological Sciences (graduated with honors), Universidad de Córdoba
  • PhD (’89) in Biological Sciences (graduated with honors), Universidad de Córdoba
  • Member of the Research Council Argentina (CONICET) at Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Vegetal, Argentina
  • Professor of Plant Systematic at the University of Córdoba, Argentina

Born in 1959, Córdoba city, as the second of three children of the school teacher Nora Ocanto and the university professor Alfredo Cocucci. Since his graduation he began studying the pollination biology of Solanaceae. His dissertation is the first study on the evolutionary radiation of pollination mechanisms of this family. He has also made contributions in the systematic and evolutionary ecology of orchids, legumes and other plant families. These mainly include studies on the flowering mechanisms of plants pollinated by solitary bees, hawkmoths, birds, bats and rodents. He has twice been fellow researcher at Mainz University (Germany) and now is staff researcher of the Research Council (CONICET) at the Flower Biology Laboratory of the Institute where he leads a group of eleven undergraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students. He has considerable field experience in several countries of South America and Africa and has done extensive field work in Patagonia in collaboration with the research lead by Dr. Alicia Sérsic.
