Year 1 – Concepción, ChileDates: January 15-21, 2006 In the first Annual Meeting, spanning five days, principal investigators and advisors gathered to discuss the project's goals, timescale, budget, and other important considerations. Presentations on Patagonian history to aid investigators in their understanding of the region were given by the local investigators. Each taxonomic group gave a report on the work being done with their taxon and met to plan research for the upcoming year and budget needs for the group. The group discussed dividing Patagonia into several geographic regions to facilitate phylogeographic analyses in the project. Maps of the divided regions, both terrestrial and geographical, can be found in the Research Area Maps section. Dr. Sites then led a discussion on standardizing collection efforts and sharing data between members of the research team. Later, the group was divided into committees to coordinate field logistics, research design & analysis, meetings & workshops, education, faculty development, and communication. The meeting was successful in deciding on and beginning the future project efforts. It ended with advice from the project's two advisors, Dr. Chris Simon and Dr. Biff Bermingham. Year 2 – Provo, Utah, USADates: June 12-14, 2006 The second annual meeting, held at BYU, lasted three days. It consisted of budget updates and discussion of further funding opportunities, undergraduate and graduate-level student exchanges, educational objectives and professional development, research programming, publishing, and workshops. Year 2b – Concepción, Chile (Botanists' meeting)Date: August, 2006 Due to a problem with visa accrual, the botanists were unable to meet with the rest of the group in Provo. Dr. Leigh Johnson brought the news from the June meeting and together the botanists met to coordinate research efforts and budgeting in their taxonomic group, the Patagonian plants, for year two. Year 3 – Puerto Madryn, ArgentinaDate: August 21-24, 2007 |
